Community Sets New Standard
For Discussions On “Race”
Paducah, Kentucky Finds Broad Community
Support for Beginning a Difficult Conversation
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – April 2, 2015 – Wave Communications is pleased to announce that Paducah, Kentucky, will be holding four Racial Taboo™ events on April 11th and 12th. These events will be at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day at Paducah’s iconic Maiden Alley Cinema. At each event, community members will watch the film Racial Taboo and then have conversations about their experiences on subjects related to “race”.
“We are very excited about Paducah’s upcoming Racial Taboo events,” said Race Unity Group spokesperson Elizabeth Khadem. “Every segment of Paducah has come together to bring Racial Taboo to our community. Our sheriff, our superintendent of Paducah City schools, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, church leaders, educators and the media are all working together to begin the conversation in our community.” The Race Unity Group is one of the sponsors of the series in Paducah.
Racial Taboo combines history, psychology and stand-up comedy to create an informative and enjoyable experience around a very difficult subject. The conversations after the film allow people to feel heard – a critical component of healing. According to the film’s director, Brian Grimm, “Community members frequently don’t know each other because we often live separate lives. Racial Taboo events like this give people a common experience — the opportunity to get to know each other and to discuss subjects that are very important to America. Paducah is to be commended for their spirit of inclusiveness and community support for this initiative.”
About Racial Taboo Events
The Racial Taboo initiative began in 2008 with the development of a film specifically designed as a tool to help people experience a meaningful conversation about subjects related to “race.” The events begin with the showing of the innovative 53-minute film Racial Taboo, and then audience members have a conversation. Paducah’s Racial Taboo series will be the first in Kentucky; others have been held in South Carolina and North Carolina, and plans are under way to expand to more states.
