Racial Taboo to Be Shown at St. Stephen AME Church as Kick-Off to the YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear’s Stand Against Racism™
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – April 3, 2014 – Wave Communications Films is pleased to announce that Racial Taboo will be shown at St. Stephen AME Church as the kick-off event for the YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear’s Stand Against Racism™. It will be shown on April 24th at 7:00 PM in the St. Stephen sanctuary located at 501 Red Cross Street. The film screening will be followed by an audience discussion. There is no charge for admission.
St. Stephen AME Church has Gothic Revival architecture and it was completed in 1886. During the Jim Crow era it had a swimming pool in the basement to provide a place for African-American members of the community to go swimming. Racial Taboo explores why it is difficult for Americans to talk about subjects related to race and how to change that. It is screened by communities who are interested in building bridges between people with different ethnic origins. Showings of this film provide a common experience and information about subjects related to race that enable meaningful conversations. “Over 1,000 people in our community have seen Racial Taboo and participated in discussions after the film. I hope more organizations like Stephen AME Church and the YWCA will sponsor these events to expand this conversation locally and in other communities. After all, People of all backgrounds really enjoy the experience,” said Brian Grimm, the film’s Director.
“The showing of this film in the historic sanctuary of St. Stephen will provide an opportunity for the community to gather together and discuss the issue of racial prejudice which has divided the community (and communities of our country) for many years. I am very excited about the outcome and look forward to welcoming the community to our beautiful church.” said Pastor Wayne Johnson.
